Albania \u2014 Europe's best-kept secret<\/h2>\n

Albania wasn't on my radar. To be honest, I knew almost nothing about the country when we drove south through Montenegro in May 2025. And that's exactly why it blew me away: zero expectations, one thousand surprises. Albania has beaches like Greece, mountains like Switzerland, and prices like Southeast Asia\u2014only without the crowds.<\/p>\n

The Albanian Riviera \u2014 dream beaches without tourists<\/h2>\n

The Albanian Riviera between Vlora and Saranda left me speechless. Ksamil is a beach with turquoise water that looks like the Caribbean\u2014but you pay \u20ac3 for a sun lounger and \u20ac5 for fresh fish on the beach. Drymades Beach is my favorite: wilder, quieter, with a beach bar vibe and breathtaking sunsets.<\/p>\n

The food in Albania completely surprised me. Fresh fish, grilled vegetables, byrek (filled phyllo pastries), and the best honey I've ever tasted. A complete dinner with wine for under \u20ac15\u2014you won't find that anywhere else in Europe.<\/p>\n

Berat \u2014 City of a Thousand Windows<\/h2>\n

Berat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and looks like a painting. White houses climb the hillside, each with enormous windows\u2014hence its nickname. The castle at the top offers a panoramic view that alone is worth the trip. Sitting in the old town in the evening, drinking raki and watching the sunset over the Osum River\u2014that's slow travel at its finest.<\/p>\n
